What do I use Energol for?

Energol is used for the exterior wood around your home.

Examples are sheds, garden furniture, fences and decking.

What is the difference between Energol and wood stain?

Traditional wood stains are fast drying and are not completely absorbed into the wood and therefore do not provide very durable protection.

Lacq Energol penetrates deep into the wood and leaves a thin coating on the surface which preserves the natural appearance of the wood.
This coating will help protect the wood from weathering for years to come.

Should I pretreat wood before applying Energol?

Preparation is important at all times, the preperation before using  Energol is straightforward.

1: Remove defective or loose parts by thoroughly sanding down & dust off. Before starting to apply Energol, make sure the wood is dry and free from dust. Do not use a high-pressure cleaner, as this may damage the structure of the wood, always sand in the direction of the wood grain.

2: For optimum results, we advise you to degrease the surface before treatment, using Fluxaf Pro-Clean.

3: If you desire a smooth finish, further sanding of the substrate may be necessary dependent upon the type of timber used

Can I apply Energol over existing layers of paint?

Because Energol protects the wood from within and layer thickness is built up, it will provide maximum protection when applied to bare wood.
That is why we advise you to fully remove all previously applied coatings.

Should I also remove an existing layer of Energol?

No, you shouldn’t! As opposed to other coatings, you need not remove the previous layer of Energol before you apply a fresh one.
Just observe the tips we gave above regarding pretreatment.
It’s simple to apply a new layer of Energol to your wood.

Should I stir Energol?

Always stir Energol well before use – especially if the tin of Energol has not been used for a while. Use the wooden stirrer, making sure you stir right down to the bottom of the tin. Stir until you no longer come across any resistance across the bottom and the colour of Energol is nice and even.

Can I use Energol in winter?

You can, as long as you make sure the surface is completely dry.
Allow a longer drying period than during warmer months.

How much Energol do I need?

One litre of Energol will cover approximately 12 m2.

DURING
What is the best way to apply Energol?

You can apply Energol with a brush, a roller, or a spray gun.
Always paint in the lengthwise direction of the wood grain.
If you use a spray gun, observe the user instructions of the spray gun.
Also, make sure to use sound breathing protection.

How many layers of Energol should I apply?

Apply up to three coats to softwood.
Hardwood has a more closed grain structure& does not absorb as softwood does apply a maximum of two coats to hardwoods.

Will the colour change when I apply multiple layers of Energol?

Dependent  on the colour, Energol gives a semi –translucent finish, allowing the natural look of the wood to shine through.

The pigments in the coloured Energol will cause the coating to become more opaque.

Is Energol matt or glossy?

The protective film formed by Energol will provide an eggshell finish.

Do I need to remove existing Energol coating before applying a new layer?

No, you shouldn’t. As opposed to other coatings, you need not remove the previous coat of Energol before you apply a fresh one.
Just observe the tips we gave above regarding pre-treatment.

AFTER
What is the drying time for Energol?

The drying time depends on the weather conditions and the substrate.
After approximately 6 hours, Energol will be touch-dry.
Re-coat after 16 hours..

How long will Energol provide protection?

The durability of Energol depends on the colour used, the substrate, and the number of coats applied.

Dependent upon adequate surface preparation & the elevation & geographic location, your wooden surface will be protected for up to 5 years.

What is the best way to store a used tin of Energol?

Close the tin well and store it in a frost-free place.

If tightly closed, it will keep for up to two  years.

Thoroughly stir well  before using the remainder.

Cleaning up after the job
